The Stomach: Description and Function
The stomach is a muscular, J-shaped organ located in the upper abdomen, between the esophagus and the small intestine. It plays a crucial role in the digestive system by breaking down food through mechanical and chemical processes.
Anatomy of the Stomach:
Cardia: The upper section where food enters from the esophagus.
Fundus: The dome-shaped top portion that stores undigested food and gases.
Body (Corpus): The main central region that mixes food with gastric juices.
Antrum (Pyloric Antrum): The lower portion that grinds food and propels it towards the pylorus.
Pylorus: The passage at the lower end that opens into the small intestine.
